Question Am I being Ripped off? - Genuine Subaru Service

Greetings all, from Sydney!

I just bought my first Subaru (MY99 Subaru Impreza RX Hatch) over 6months ago. This was from a Subaru 2nd hand dealership bought for $AU12000 or 5600 pounds.

I have now had the 6 Month service and they have explained to me that the muffler, clutch and oil pump will need to be replaced.

Additional work include timing belt replacements, and machinning of the flywheel.

This will come to a cost of $AU2800 or 1315 pounds.

I'm not the most car savvy person, though have very capable friends is there any way I can make this cheaper on myself by doing some of the easier work myself?

You sure its the oil pump and not the hydraulic cambelt tensioner just seems funny on a service it needs a pump when it sounds like there were no symptoms of problems-generally not always its wise to replace the tensioner if the seals are iffy for obvious reasons.

Had a cambelt service at roger clark motorsport a few yr ago now included engine oil change/filter, gear and diff oil replaced, new hydraulic tensioner+new idler pulleys, new lambda sensor(went in with nackered one),fuel filter at their prices were 500quids worth of parts total bill inc labour and vat were 823

so if theyre a dealer and not cheap and doin all that (if its a full cambelt service etc)ok take off the 02 sensor add clutch an flywheel/fitting as dealer prices go yer its probably right even though it sounds alot.

Took mine to zen performance for a gearbox fault with 5th gear(couldnt get it-syncro damage etc etc)sorted the box + whilst it were out my clutch were about shot so had an exedy organic in and a new lightened flywheel total cost 1357

sorry to dissapoint ya mate there is cheaper places ya could get it done i bet-i could have got it done cheaper-i just like it done right with no hassles though i prefer to use specialists over main dealers.

Cheers mate, I had a chat with the blokes down at the dealership this arvo and also some of my mates. Basically the price is probably right, just a bit annoyed cus I don't have the money atm.

This is the Recommendations they made for fixing:
BRAKE REPORT - FRONT 55% REAR 60% APPROX MATERIAL LEFT
A/C & ALT BELTS WORN
REAR MUFFLER & GASKET LEAKING
OIL LEAKS FROM THE FRONT CAM & CRANK SEALS.

I'll probably fix these in stages as I get the money, even though I would have prefer'd spendin the money on exhausts, dropping it, and some other after market performance etc hahaha.

V-nice sube btw, I want to do similar things with my wagon.

Cheers,

Matt

I know the feeling, hadnt had mine that long when i took it in though didnt help when on the way for the service down the motorway i found i couldnt get 5th gear after being stuck in traffic-had to take it in saying dont sort the box yet i cant afford it-took it elsewhere in the end anyway for gearbox prob, however after new gear oil were put in at service on the way bk were fine so i thought great its sorted..........................went out in car next day-same again-gutted.I left it nearly a yr before getting it done-i push funds at the best of times owning a scooby-i aint rich even if i do spend more than i should on wax etc.
