Re-build? Or replacement engine?

Further to my 'White smoke' thread from earlier this week, I have the following question which I would like to pose:

I've been quoted around £3500 by two garages to re-build my current engine (standard two litre turbo MY99) - but unfortunately have just moved into a new flat and am completely skint!

Would you bite the bullet and do this, or risk searching breaker's yards for a second hand engine and replace that as a much cheaper option?

If you were going to replace the engine, would you stick to a standard one or try and find a more powerful WRX or even STI model? Or would this be too complicated in fitting to standard parts etc.

If you were going to have it re-built, for the same price would you leave it at Well Lane Turbo Centre in Batley where it is now, or have it taken to Scoobyclinic in Chesterfield? YTes Tidgy, I know what you will say....

Any potentially libellous messages about either garage can be sent to me via private message!

Interesting......it is a standard turbo MY99 on a 'T' plate i.e. 3/99 onwards, the 215 bhp model.

Cheers for that. Like the site, he obviously knows his stuff! Looks a bit more geared for Rally prep though than getting sick road cars back on their wheels....

the main site is a little out of date and our main work now is engine/gearbox work for all impreza's/evo's from std builds to monsters.........................

£3500 for a std re-build seems very over the top, but would have to know exactly the problems and what components they are replacing???

happy to discuss if you want to call 0191-4103770 and we are based just south of Newcastle so not miles away if you need any help/work

cheers, alyn
