Maf, can it be removed to prevent failure?
 

I have nver been unlucky enough, tounch wood (pats head:lol: ) to have a maf sensor fail on my my00 uk turbo.

so a question for all you technical bods out there,
1:to prevent failure is it worth removing the maf and replacing with some other form of system to do the same thing?
2:is it cost prohibative?
3:what would it entail?

Call me stupid, but doesnt your car have to use a MAF sensor to run?

yeah mate, but you can by pass it so i've been told, have a feeling it might be if you change the ecu, but not sure so hence asking

I say stick with your MSF sensor mate. I think its a lot of money to convert??

What induction set up do u have?

I have a my2000 scoob with a Green type panel filter, and ive had no problems.
I belive the only thing that destroys the sensors are heavily oiled filters, induction kits which are not properly secured and damage caused by miss treatment i.e. not being carefull when removing and relplacing a filter??

Thats my thoughts anyway.

no mate, not broke just wondering f theres any cheap optins to replace it to prevent failure, only running a pannel filter anway.

There is an option to get rid of it mate, but its with a difference ECU if I remember rightly... Bob was telling me about it because of Poxy and his racing life, he decided to get rid of it.

I dont know how it works, but all I do know it will cost a lot to do. Baring in mind, my MAF sensor went, £245.. If youres goes, its more like £80 or so... I'd stick with how yours is setup rather than worrying about that.. So much money for no real gain...

When Poxy's maf's went pop he was lucky really as the car came to a stop and would not run. The problem lies when the maf is only playing up and you start to run rich or weak...:eek: Most the top stand alone ECU's do away with the MAF and use MAP. I had aultronic and Poxy went with Motec.

Poxy's first Maf went when a car came of track in front of him throwing up a dust cloud that Paul drove through. Induction kit just let to many particles through and shot blasted the maf. Second was down to vibration...Induction kit at fault again... Poxy did have the MY99 MAF so did expect troubles.

im planning to switch to gems ecu so i can do away with my maf sensor because 1400 pound fitted and mapped is cheaper than another 7000 for an engine as when mine went it ran lean and killed number 3 big end bearing .
so as the rule says when it goes bang build it bigger and beter:lol:

I did the same, Type R had the dreaded MY99 MAF and after spending 8k on the engine I did not want it happening again..
