Smoking brakes

I had my car serviced 2 weeks ago they put on new front brake pads as the other ones were on the limit nearly. Car has been fine i have been braking gently to bed them in yesterday the smell off my pads was overwhelming and the brake pedal was really spongy the pedal almost went to the floor before my car would stop got on my works car park and the smoke coming from the front brakes was unreal i thought they was on fire at first what could be the cause cheers

Hi m8, you probably need to bleed the system of air - if air is in your lines then can give way to the spongy feeling you witnessed! --- If your unsure about bleeding (bleed screws on the caliper) then prob best get it into the garage...

Your brakes would have locked down on the disc hence your driving with the brakes on and hence the smoke (got red hot!)

Keep us informed All the best

took it down to the garage explained to the owner of the place he said he will take it for a test drive he comes back and says the brake fluid needs changing to dot 5.1 and i need harder pads obviosly he did not work on it one of his monkeys with a spanner did it and now this is going to happen more so i will have to brake carefully and take my time also he said the smoke was coming from the copper grease on the caliper and pads

copper grease on the pads? as in on the side facing the disk? wtf are they doing to get it there as surely they wouldn`t smoke if the copper grease was between the caliper and the backs of the pads

yes m8 - dont think you need pagid pads --- you have a very wide selction of pads available to you... - I would have got the system bled before forking out again --- Air in the system could ave given the spongy feeling....

Good luck, keep us informed.

Sorry to hear that mate, there are a lot of cowboys about who just pretend they know what there doing but dont actually know the basics.

This is why i always service and repair the cars myself. Plus its a lot cheaper.

Hope u get it sorted mate.

only dealings i've had with them is when a mate came flying past me when i braked to turn right. his had overheated and failed (wern't even giving it stick for long either) he was shaking like a leaf when he got out the car.
