Dumbass question here also, why is the 2L version better for tuning than the 2.5L?

Here's the links for the cars:

The new 2lt engines can be tuned to 400 bhp with no problems. Its quite easy. Just inlet exhaust and remap will put you very close to this.
The std 2.5 engine will not take more than 1.3 bar as the pistons are so large you get ring problems. They tend to brake up quite easily. You can change the pistons in the 2.5 which will help but the rings are still the weak part. Change the pistons in a 2ltr and the skys the limit. The 2ltr will rev much better than the 2.5. Most cars that have had the 2.5 ltr upgrade find the engine uses so much oil. Mine used 1ltr every 500 miles. I put a oil catch tank on but still used 1 ltr every 1000. It does not burn the oil it sucks it up from the crank vent. Seems the extra 500cc will give more bottom end pressure and with the larger turbo the vapours just get sucked up.

On the 2.0 vs 2.5.

When I questioned a few mod'ers in the UK, they told me the original 2.0STi engine (as e.g. found in the 03 STi) is really an STi built engine with reinforced components etc to be used as base for competition.

The 2.5 in in fact the US spec 2.5 liter engine as can be found in quite a few standard Subarus. It can handle a turbo but once you try pushing the power up, the internals can cope as well.

The 2.5 comes in the STi, WRX, Legacy, Baja, Forester and Outback.
