Hi All
Just thought I would say hello and ask my first question as a newbie. I'm Jordy (not my real name just a nickname) and I am the proud owner of a Version 7 WRX in Silver. I've only had it about 7 months but everyday since I bought it has been awesome - there is nothing like turning the key in the ignition in the morning and waking the neighbours ![]() I've always wanted a Scooby and after my last car was torched in an Arson attack (I kid you not) it gave me the perfect opportunity to upgrade to one. It was pretty much standard, it came fitted with an Afterburner back box, but that was it. Since then I have added an original STi rear wing, Prodrive UK300 front splitter, Prodrive UK300 front clusters and had the side skirts colour coded. Okay here's my question. I think my Turbo is about to die, but it could be the dump valve making the noise and causing the loss of power at the top end - I have a recircular valve coming to replace it so i'll know soon enough. If it is the Turbo I have been advised to swap out my standard VF28 turbo and wack in a VF24 which has a larger inlet and outlet and when coupled with a decat and a decent remap will give me around 300bhp and no need to mess with the cooling system. Now this guy knows his stuff, but I just wanted to check what my other options are. I also can't understand why the VF28 is more expensive than the VF24 if the later is a better turbo. look forward to hearing from you Jordy ![]() Last edited by Jordy; 06 Jun 2006 at 03:55 PM. |

Welcome to the site
![]() I would say that you really need to make sure that your turbo has gone before replacing it on them grounds! Many people think turbos have gone before rulling out other things such as sensors. For a good read on what the VF series of turbos do (performance delivery) i would suggest having a good old read through http://www.scoobytuner.com/tuning/?tSfID1=4&tuningID=43 Makes for interesting reading ![]() Please keep us informed of your progress - all the best ![]() |

Hello chaps
Cheers its good to be on here. Thanks for the info Gareth, I will have a read through it all this afternoon and see what's what on the Turbo front. I am hoping its the original dump valve that's causing the spool up whistle and loss of power top end, but me thinks I am not that lucky. Will Do Gaza, I must have to admit to not taking any as yet, but will do now the body has been sorted. Do I just upload them here or to a particular place on the forum? CHeers again fellas Jordy |

you may or may not be aware that turbo carged cars down't like hot weather one bit you maybe up to 25% down on power today cos of how warm it is (if you've not got a front mount intercooler that is) so might be that thats causing the lack of top end power.
also if the dump vlve is on the way out it may be bleeding boost hence whistle and also adding to lack of power

Cheers Tidgy
Yeah I was aware there would be a performance difference in the heat especially with the standard intercooler I currently run, but I have been noticing the drop off for a few months now even back when we had a fair bit of snow. The noise has changed from a swoosh noise about 2-3 months ago to a high pitch whistle type noise in the last few weeks, so I'm not sure if it's the Turbo or the dump valve. Hopefully when the new Forge one turns up i'll know for sure once I fit it. Having checked out some Turbos around I think the VF24 is a good all rounder and I have to be honest, I am only looking to run 300-350bhp absolute max when I am finished. That's plenty of power for me so i'll be happy with 300bhp. ![]() |

can't realy tell to be honest, best bet get someone aka specialist to have a look and tell you what needs to be done to fix it.

Yeah funnily enough the guy advising me on the Turbos and who actually thinks it's the turbo, is about to ramp up his Scooby next week to about 650bhp so me thinks he knows a fair bit about cars.
Oh you read that right - he's wacked in some serious gear including a JUN engine imported especially from Japan. |

He's nick name is Jim (I better keep his real name underwraps for privacy) and works and lives in High Wycombe. I'm sure you'll here of him soon, if not the car, I know he's off to Santa Pod if the car gets done in time. Top bloke and knows so much about cars its baffling. I've been in the car while it was running 360bhp. it was reigned back until the new gearbox went in, even then it was flipping bonkers. The new gear box is in now so hence it's back in for a remap
