I got my reservations around the efficiency of this fuel.

Octane points are often seen as a sign of quality. But octane is only a small part of the package. The fuel needs a complete mix of additives that lubricate, clean, help combustion etc.

On the last RR day of the WR owners club, some people were pretty dissappointed after using high RON supermarket fuels.

Look forward to seeing the 99 RON...

Your right though torrekens - ive read reports that supermarket fuels are less consistent than the texacos of the world as they can get their fuel from anywhere - basically bought into the country on price - so whoever is cheapest etc... dont know the full ins and outs of this but its a good point...

The principle is simple:

The base material (petrol) is the same out of about any refinery. That's why you see Shell lorries filling up at BP refineries, Exxon guys filling at Shell etc.

The supermarkets fill up at exactly the same refineries.

The cost of the liquid is the same for everyone and so are the taxes, so why the difference?

Simple: Petrol on its own doesn't suit a modern car in the long run. You need to add a mixture of additives.
The additives go in the lorry (hence the diffference between the manufacturers) and the mixture is kept secret by each company.

The additives are very expensive compared to the fuel itself. Hence why price differences can be obtained.

I suspect the Tesco's of this world only ensure the octane number goes up (as this is the thing consumers notice) but do skimp on the other ones in order to be able to offer the 99Ron at a lower cost than Shell etc.

EVERYONE I know who used to use Optimax has now gone to the Tesco 99 RON.

As for saving 5p a litre it's ok if you're likely to be spending fifty pound instore otherwise it's not a good deal as with most cars if you put an average of 50 litres that's only a saving of 2.50

For the quality doubters this is not bog standard supermarket fuel, it is supplied by a company called Greenenergy.

Check out the website, it has a PDF file of the full product spec for this 99Ron
