fuel gauge issue or leak?

Filled up my 15 year old Impreza 2.0 hatchback to "click" on pump's fuel gun mid March 2020 and did the 12 miles home from the garage. Car hardly used since then..done about 6 miles since then just to keep things moving. Car starts perfectly and runs the same as always i.e. ok..no issues at all).

HOWEVER, Fuel gauge has dropped from near full to 3/4 full?..that's about 2&3/4 gallons?! Cannot see a leak or smell petrol or see tell-tale marks on concrete drive.

Could this be the gauge or sender? If I'd lost that much fuel I would have thought I'd notice it (smell etc)

The last time I used the car the gauge absolutely flew down from full to 3/4 on a long journey..to the extent I thought I was going to have a problem...it then behaved more or less normally. When I topped up near home I'd done pretty much normal mileage for this car (it was carrying a lot of weight).

Whip the pump and sender out the tank and check the float, while out gives you chance you check the fuel pump sock,
Fuel filler necks rot, so it may have evaporated, but im not sure it would evaporate at the rate you mention,
Also when the sender/pump is out you can visually see how full your tank is,
It may be full to the brim.
