overflow tank.

Hi all. Whats the deal with the overflow tank near the battery? Mine looks empty when the engine is cold. No fluid level in the tube sticking out. My metal expansion tank is full and heater blows nice and hot. Done a few searchs online and theres many conflicting views on whether its ok for it to appear empty or not. This scooby is defo causing me to do a lot of beard scratching. lol.

Re: overflow tank.

well the tube should have coolant in it and should be at least between the empty and full marker, but since you have mentioned a radiator leak in another post its possibly related.

Unless your on about the big plastic one thats a kind of cube shape then that is for screen wash.

Sounds like your rebuilding the whole car with the anount of issues you've got, hopefully you get it all sorted without breaking the bank.

Re: overflow tank.

Feels like i may have been mislead about the condition and how well maintained the car was. Touch wood i dont find any thing out of my comfort zone to repair myself. The rad leak is very minimal though. Left a bowl under the leak and theres virtually nothing. I collected the car from 200 miles away. Would i have not had issues if the overflow was empty? I have read loads of posts stating their overflow appears empty though.

Re: overflow tank.

I checked the oil and fluid levels but didnt know there was this overflow tank. The water in the header tank was full so assumed that was fine. Looked at a few scoobys and this tank wasnt mentioned by any of the sellers. Either they assumed i knew or didnt know themselves. Do i just slowly top up the overflow until the levels between the marks? Still not sure why the cars heating/cooling system would operate fine if said tank was empty.

Re: overflow tank.

the tank is a supplementary tank, to "top up" the system if it needs it, it isnt part of the pressurized system,
As you have that weep and a empty tank . . just a guess,

Once you have topped it up keep an eye on it, it does go and up and down by a inch or so, but it sticks to these 2 points, it wont drop a inch below the line and then another, it will be that inch below and maybe next time that inch above,
No idea why,

so if yours just keeps emptying and that corner of your rad is always wet . . .
