Question dealer trying to charge me for spare key!

I recently traded in my 06 STi to a main dealer for a 58' STi 330S.

During the initial valuation of my old car there was no mention of me supplying 2 keys.
When I went to collect the 330S we signed all the documents and the salesguy then says, "can i have your keys". I said I only have 1 key with me, I couldn't find the other.
He then asked me to sign a document stating I would locate and supply the 2nd key or pay 250 for a replacement.
I refused to sign this, saying that I would have another look for the key at home, but I was not 100% sure that I would be able to find it, and I was not willing to be liable for that charge should I not be able to find it.
Well, it's been almost a week and they are still pestering me about the key. Needless to say I can't find it anywhere.

They are now saying they are going to bill me for it.
I told them there is no way I'm paying this, and they have nothing in writing to say I would supply a spare key.

On the other hand, they appear to have made a mistake in their brochure stating that my car will be supplied with a CD Changer, which it doesn't have.
I pointed out that if they continue with the pursuit of the key, I will pursue them for the cd changer which I have printed documentation for.

In reality, what should I do?

I'm also not happy about the tyres they put on the car, totally unsuitable/substandard for the vehicle.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: dealer trying to charge me for spare key!

if there is nothing in your paperwork listing 2 x keys and 1 x alloy wheel key etc then its up to them,
no different to buying a car private, you cant bill the old owner for something that's missing after the deal is done,

and did you check the speed rating of the tyres, its a simple way to have them over a barrel, your insurance would be void also if you made a claim and the tyres were found to be wrong.

Wonder how Subaru uk would view all this rubbish. It's not the sort of service you'd expect from a main dealer IMHO

Re: dealer trying to charge me for spare key!

You're right it's not what I expected from a main dealer so I've decided to write a formal letter of complaint to the dealership and a copy to Subaru UK.
I'll update with the outcome.

My main annoyance is with the tyres and Subaru's official line from the manual does state that they consider it completely dangerous to fit different tyre manufacturers, brands or tread patterns to the same vehicle so I think I have good cause for complaint.

Re: dealer trying to charge me for spare key!

Well, I got a response from the dealership yesterday by letter.

I'm not completely satisfied with their response though.
Basically, they are saying:
1. The will drop the matter of the spare key, but are basically "letting me away with it" - making it out like they are doing me a favour by not pursuing it further.
2. They say the tyres match the required speed rating, so are fine for use on my car - even though I quoted the Subaru information regarding mixing tread types etc.
3. They say they just copied the car spec from Subaru UK for use on their adverts, and although the information was wrong it wasn't their fault even though they didn't check it, advertised it incorrectly in three different adverts and told me verbally that the car had an autochanger when it doesn't. But they aren't willing to do anything about it.

They did offer to let me "upgrade" my tyres at additional cost.

I'm in two minds on what to do.
I know I could pursue them via trading standards / small claims regarding false advertising for the CD Changer, but may go down the route of arguing the point but saying I'm willing to let this drop if I get my tyre upgrade free of charge.

...or do I drop the matter altogether and forget about it.

I feel their entire attitude is very unprofessional.

Re: dealer trying to charge me for spare key!

There was a letter from Subaru UK waiting for me when I got home on Friday.
It says they are investigating the matter and will write back to me shortly.
