my04 WRX boot lid torsion bar spring loaded?

OK so I'm probably gonna win some award for STooopId Question of the Day but: is the bootlid on my 54 plate WRX springloaded? There appears to be a torsion bar set-up which I assume is to provide just a little "lift" when I pop the release lever but it sure as hell don't work! To many of you this sounds petty but I use my boot a lot (and I mean A LOT) and I'm getting, or rather I've already got, a lot of unslightly scratch marks where I have to ease my fingers under the edge of the lid to open it. Worse still, some (so called) friends use the spoiler to lift the lid instead which drives me nuts!

If it has an sti spoiler then the weight is heavier which is why it doesn't work

It is a standard spoiler. My local dealership tell me that the torsion bars have lost their tension but they could not replace them as they are unable to obtain the part(!) The only other option is for me to source the part myself from a breakers and replace it myself. Anybody got any tips/advice/pearls of wisdom regading this job? How hard can it be!?
