New suspension fitted, does this look right

Yesterday my wife had some new suspension (coilovers) fitted to our WRX (it's her toy :-) ).

After that, at the local garage getting some new brake pads fitted, they were surprised to that the strings had 3 to 4 inches of moment up and down when the weight was off the wheel. Also there is a lot of noise coming off the back end now when driving, rattling type sounds. There is also very little bounce in the suspension at the back. The garage are saying this would cause it to fail it's MOT.

The guys who fitted them is saying this is normal and not a problem. He advised that we let the new suspension 'settle' for 48 hours and that this could make a difference to the noise. I am sceptical.

I have some picture of the spring when the weight is off the wheels.

Picture are here

I am not a car person, and my wife's interest does not go as far as understanding this sort of thing. I would be really grateful if someone in the know could advise whether:

- The movement in the springs is normal / acceptable.
- The noise from the new suspension is normal (has to be put up with) or whether it should be quiet as we has expected.
- This could cause the car to fail its MOT.

Thanks in advance :-)

Re: New suspension fitted, does this look right

Thanks for the reply. The guys at Kwik Fit has already said he would fail it .

As it stands I am not happy to drive the car, and am pushing the guy who did the work to correct it. I am really looking for some weight of opinion to press him to get the job done right.

Got a look at the pics and looks wrong to me. I wonder if they locked up the coilovers properly after fitting. Who fitted them?

Re: New suspension fitted, does this look right

It was a friend of a friend, touted as a Subaru specialist.

He spent a long time adjusting the bottom plate, first having it such that the height of the car was 'normal'. This was making lots of rattling noise so he tried various position up to very high, and then various positions down to very low. He tried driving it lots to help it 'settle' in, and then suggested we drive it for 48 hours to further help it 'settle' in. I suspect suspension needs no settling in and this is either him not knowing what he's doing or hoping for the best.

He's left it very low (as you can imagine from the pictures) saying it has to be this low to stop the noise even though it's more noisy then when it was high.

I am very annoyed at this point, especially after paying for this work to be done.

Thanks for replying, it's really appreciated.

Re: New suspension fitted, does this look right

suspension does need to settle but as mentioned thats not fitted right,
simple job of returning and a failure slip from a MOT station would prove it,
No expert im afraid, cowboy is more a term Id use,

also the springs are far tooooooooooo hard for UK roads at 7kg,
I run 6F/5R on a track car, you really want 5F 4R for UK roads, this is why so many hate Coilovers.

Thanks for that.

do you have an opinion on the noise (even when springs are tight)? Should you get a rattle off coilovers? I'm happy to accept that if thats Just how they but don't want it if its wrong.

Cheers

Re: New suspension fitted, does this look right

Thanks for the replies.

We had the car looked at by a local sports car garage. This is the report they produced (ignore the bit about the brakes... that's nothing to do with this). I didn't mentioned it before, however the guys who fitted the coilovers did not do a wheel alignment afterwards either.

Please see the report image here, direct links are not working for some reason: Gallery link

I am pleased I have something down in back and white. Now to convince this guy he should give me my money back.

Re: New suspension fitted, does this look right

Also, here's the wheel alignment report. Although the garage did take me through this today, I have forgotten exactly what they said. Would someone with the knowledge be able to tell me whether the before measurements look bad?

Thanks.

Re: New suspension fitted, does this look right

thats bad mate, take it off the road till it can be sorted, alignment is the least of the problems.

Sounds like they have done damage as well when they have fitted them (studs)
