Timing Belt Replacement

Got a Subaru Impreza(2Litre, SOHC) which is due for the timing belt replacement. Suprisingly to me, the dealers are the same price as normal mechanics, except when it came to what needs to be done.
The mechanic said for the first belt replacement you don't need anything else. However the dealer said 9 times out of 10 you need to replace idler pulleys and tensioners and possibly water pump. Does this all need to be done or can we just replace the timing belt. I was advised the idler pulleys are around $150 AUD each).
How would I know if the idler pulley needs replacement, is it a noise from the engine bay or is it only by inspection?

Re: Timing Belt Replacement

Gday sport... Yeah the only real way to know if the tensioner/idlers need to be replaced is by inspection from a mechanic who knows what they are doing and not a mechanic who is just a bolt on new part merchant. Whilst the belt is being done a good percentage of people will purchase a kit to ensure the tensioner etc is also done, as from what I have been informed the belt will not always snap but is thrown off by a shot tensioner. Where in OZ u from?

from the highlands, (near Sydney and Wollongong region).

Do you know what the price difference is between a belt and a full kit? I was told the pulley are around $150 each.
