New soon to be owner advice

Hi all I'm going to look at my first impreza on Sunday and I was wondering what I should look out for in the way of normal problems, expensive problems, tell tail signs etc?

Ive decided on a 1999 impreza estate 2.0 non turbo AWD sport. Any advice? Be gentle I'm new

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Thanks thats great! Sadly I cannot afford to run the turbo, however if this first impreza serves me well I'd love to move to one of the turbo wrx sti cars, just at the moment I can only afford the non turbo :P

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Hope it all works out for you mate. Just have a good poke around underneath with a screwdriver, especially around the front of the legs (behind the front wheels)

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Would that poking around be to check for rust patches or something else?

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Yeah, rust ! Too many people jack the car up on the legs to get front wheel off. This just folds the leg in and splits the sealer so rust sets in.

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Ok thanks for that bit of extra advice I'll keep my eye out for this when I have a look at this car.

One last thing do you know of anyone on the site selling one of these cars? Because at the moment I have been only able to find one non turbo sport wagon :P

Not that I know of but worth a post. There will be bags of the turbo model but not so many non-turbo about. Try the usual sites, Autotrader, Pistonheads Exchange and Mart

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Would the turbo be that much more expensive? I've never owned a non turbo so have no idea on insurance/running etc.

Re: New soon to be owner advice

I guess the insurance would be cheaper but I couldn't have the non-turbo for more than an hour before wishing I bought a wrx or sti

Re: New soon to be owner advice

its all about the running costs, id love a turbo but the overall increase in petrol use and insurance hike would make it not viable, unless someone can tell me otherwise?

Of course im happy to look at some turbo versions but im looking for one under 1k are there any on the forum?

Re: New soon to be owner advice

Well I only recently got a WRX estate ('53 plate) and i cant believe how good the runnong costs are, far lower than i was led to believe, and the insurance was reasonable from AutoDirect So its worth having a look around at costs etc before you buy because you will wish you got the turbo

Re: New soon to be owner advice

I have a non turbo newage.its prettynippy thanks to awd. im looking at selling mine due to needing a cheaper car to run. it has carbon fibre bonnet and wrx seats and more let me no if you are interested in pics or info. but the insurance between non turbo and turbo are stupid. 996 for a non turbo and 3600 for a wrx...... good luck with finding your car mate
