Impreza upgrade

I'm looking into buying a 2005 Impreza in the near future. I originally wanted to just buy the STi and do small upgrades, like lowering springs, body kit, rims, etc... After doing research, I realized that the insurance cost is also higher. Would it be possible or even reasonable to buy a base 2005 impreza model to obtain a low insurance and then mod it to become an STi? Also, would it be cheaper to buy a WRX and mod it rather than buying an STi and also doing small upgrades?

Re: Impreza upgrade

you may aswell buy the sti in the 1st place.

Maybe look at slightly older models.

What budget do you have in mind?

Re: Impreza upgrade

That's what I was wondering, whether I should buy a stock Impreza, the WRX, or the Sti. I don't mind spending the time working on the car, I love doing it. I don't have a set budget yet, but I am looking for the cheapest route. I also thought it might help to take future insurance cost in consideration, which is why i wanted to work on the base Impreza. Specifically, I am interested in Impreza's that are 2004+, nothing older. I like the style's better.

Re: Impreza upgrade

start with a quick one and make it quicker!!!...totally pointless trying to make a lesser model into something it never will be!!...

Re: Impreza upgrade

For insurance then a WRX would be cheaper to insure than an STI. Obviously an STI has a much better spec and would need less mods for performance.
If you do start modding then a lot of insurers won't insure you anyway, you'll need to go to the specialist brokers.
I'd say buy the best you can afford, go for the STI and take it from there. If you get a WRX you may just regret it and wish you'd bought the STI.
What ever you do, have fun !

Re: Impreza upgrade

I think in my case it will be cheaper to go with the WRX. I will be replacing either impreza with an upgraded turbo charger or a supercharger, the brake system will be upgraded, along with lowering kits and body work. I compared specs of the STi and the WRX and the WRX only has a 2.0 L engine. This for real? if it is, should i just go with the 2.5 RS and upgrade it with supercharger, intercooler, etc.. also, would i need new headers and pistons for the 2.5 RS so it could handle the compresssion?

depends how far you push it.

tbh if your going this far then i'd just go with a wrx or find a sti with a self destructed engine.

no point in paying extra for an sti when most of the components are gonna be replaced anyway.

Re: Impreza upgrade

need to hunt round mate, theres normaly a few for sale here and there, but traders tend to snap them up because they can put an engine in and make a profit on it. try advertising that your lookign for a rolling shell

Re: Impreza upgrade

Could also buy a write off STI at auction. Loads of salvage auctions knocking about
