Newbie looking to buy first scooby

Hi all,
I'm a newbie, only joined today. I am yet to buy my first Scooby and am looking for tips to help prevent me from getting a duffer.

I'm planning on getting it next month, need one more pay day

I'd like to get a 1999/2000 STI and my budget is 4k - 5k.
The problem is that most of the tidy examples I have found on pistonheads or ebay have had an engine rebuild at some point in their life.

Is there something I should be aware of?
What should I look out for and avoid?
Any recommended dealers? Will travel anywhere in the UK for the right car.

Any help appreciated.

Impreza STI Type RA... are they a lot noisier in the cabin that the standard STI's?

Welcome to .org mate, start with this Subaru Impreza - Buying Checklist
It's the Scoobing checklist.
For that money you'll find a nice car, but you'll get a lot of duffers too. My classic 95 has done 135K miles and still runs fine, never had a rebuild and doesn't need one yet !!! The key is maintenance,an oil change every 5k miles, super unleaded fuel.......
Just don't settle for anything less than what you are looking for.
The Scooby can be a little noisy in the cabin, this is because the weight is kept to a minimum with very little soundproofing. After all it's a performance car !!
Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Re: Newbie looking to buy first scooby

That's a great checklist, cheers.

The car is gonna be a daily driver with business miles occasionally up and down the country so I think the type RA is out. Having once had a Golf GTI MK2 with a stupid loud exhaust, it was fun in the summer with the windows down, tunes up ragging around the B roads but 100mile + drives were not so enjoyable

Looks like I just need some patience.

Re: Newbie looking to buy first scooby

Hi, as a suggestion for 5k you could well be close to a 2004 WRX. For that sort of cash you ll get a real nice car, the prices on scoobies has really dropped so cash really is king. Not quite the RA you were initially looking for but the WRX is a great daily drive and can be upped in terms of power for 500-600 by 40 horses or so. Yep service history is key, dont be put off by cars with specialist history as these guys really know there stuff. Good luck with the hunt, took me 6 mths and 4 viewings before I purchased mine. Dont rush or panic, if something does not add up then walk away. Their are some great scoobies about on the market.
