Re: Welcome andydurbs joins our Forums...

Hi

I have just bought a silver 1996 wrx import but.......................................... on the drive home it seems to of developed a problem.

Did the 50km journey got out the car and noticed the water bubbling out the expansion bottle located passenger side near the front head light.

I immediatly thought head gasket and wondered if i had been had (previous owner was a vauxhall mechanic). Checked to see if the thermostat was working and all the pipes were warm.

The header tank was bone dry??? There is nothing up with the oil and no smoke from the back.

Bleed the cooling system for air blocks, took it for a drive and if you drive like a gran dad and then some the car is ok but if you boost it ends up throwing its water out??? My mate who is a mechanic said he reckons its the water pump?

Rang the previous owner who seemed genuine and concerned, would love to give this car back but its not an option any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also needs a clutch (he said the clutch was fine, 1st & 2nd yeah 3rd 4th 5th on boost it slips. I said the biting point was high and i was told by the previous owner the clutch was adjustable??? and he thought it was fairly new??)

I knew buying an impreza was risky but off a mechanic i thought maybe i stood a chance lol.

Any advice would be appreciated Thanks

1.5 or 2 bar is far to high, 1.1 or 1.2 bar from memory.

Re: Welcome andydurbs joins our Forums...

i thought that i cant find 1.5 or 2.0 so its looking like 1.3

BUT................. think the running on no water has had an affect on the bottom end can hear it knocking so just going to part ex it and be done with it.

Had my tiny play lol

Re: Welcome andydurbs joins our Forums...

Hi Andy,

I am a new member too. Sorry you seem to be disappointed with scoobies. Before you bite the bullet and part ex it get the knocking checked. Knocking doesn\'t normally go away when warm, well not much but piston slap does and some people mistake piston slap for bottom end knock.

Good luck with it.

Re: Welcome andydurbs joins our Forums...

Hi am am back, had a nightmare with this car part ex'd it on a clio 172 which was worse then had to fight to get my subaru back even got the police involved blah blah........

Anyway clutch is on its last legs
Knocking is still there maybe a bit louder then before
And its still throwing its water out.

Now the clutch is wear and tear its a normal things to deal with, the knocking is gutting but again not the first scooby to knock lol so i can understand that its the water issue i AM LOST ON.

If i drive nice and could even sit in traffic for an hour and the car does not miss a bit, water is fine no loss no bubbling nothing.

It only happens on full boost or near enough full boost.

For example if i nailed it in 1st 2nd & 3rd it will actually dump literally 4ltrs of water, sprays it out the expansion tank.

Could be head gasket but if driven normally its 100% fine and when driven hard for like 15-20 seconds it can dump 4ltrs of water??? So i dont think its head.

I have replaced the header tank cap (rad cap) with a 1.3 bar cap so that is not the problem, its either water pump or possibly turbo boiling the water?

Car runs 1.2bar of boost?

Any help or idea's / suggestions are welcomed please

Oh and actually having fun in the car for once stopped stressing so much and keep 6ltrs of water in the car in case i have a play on the odd farmers dirt road or wet round a bout lol

Thanks
