Help running problem fuel issue ?

Hiya guys I'm new to the forum wondered in anyone could offer some advise ? I've been a mechanic for twenty years so I got a good idea about engines currently a diagnostic tech at landrover

My car is a 1999 v5 sti I've had it 12 and a half years hahaha

about a year ago one cold night the in tank fuel pump packed up !! I kicked the tank and it started but when I tried to drive it away and was gutless popping and banging flat as anything so I fitted a Walbro pump 240 and it was perfect for a year until last Friday

After work last week I came out after fixing everybody's else car ha at landrover which are a pain in the bum to fix hahaha it started but couldn't Rev it up doing the same as when the pump packed in ! so this time I put a Rodger Clarke fuel pump 340 in it starts runs fine but under very hard acceleration feels like the pressures dropping off then bang kicks back in just hesitates

I'm sure it's fuel related I was thinkIng the fuel pressure too high and the standard fuel pressure regulator manually opening due to excess pressure so I need to upgrade my regulator

I got fault code 21 coolant temp sender

The fuel pressure is at 3.8 bar at idle
I chanced the maff bout 5 year ago that brought the check engine light up thought!

Dunno??? please help someone on here must have had similar problem

Hi and Welcome to the Forum,
Did you fit the new fuel sock or use the old one on the new pump ?
A lot say use the old one,

also the CTS is a common issue that causes problems, so if you have cleared the code and it has come back Id be swapping it.

Hi mate thanks ,

To be honest I dint use the old one I when I took the Walbro one out after a year it was a funny colour , I thought it fooked hahah so it is probly best practice to use the original one

Surely that Roger Clark one one hasn't failed already haha it cost me 120 and the Walbro one was 80 ha


It's only on really hard acceleration 7 thou in second hahah or full boost in 3rd just dies then kicks back in

It's not the fuel cut coz me boost only .9 of a bar

About 3 months ago the water pipe went off the oil cooler and I dint cook it but it got hot and I was messing about bleeding it for ages so could of caused it to fail

Can the coolant temp sender cause a fault like that mate are there problems with them ???

I will erase that tomorrow and re try

My thinking of the fuel pressure reg coz I've seen them for sale at different pressures. 3.0 3.5 4.0 bar variation standard fitment so I'm sure the figures are maximum working pressures where it will mechanically fly open and dump me fuel back

Might just get a coolant temp sender and a updated pressure reg a syntec or fuel lab

Im interested in how you get this resolved as I have just purchased a Roger Clark 340lph fuel pump and will be getting it fitted in a couple of weeks.

My previous scooby had a Walbro 255lph in it but the mechanic swapped the original subaru fuel sock over and it was perfect.

Well mate

I will tell you Sunday after i fit a up rated pressure regulator , I could just have a fault with my regulator

Looking at fuel pressure when I remove the vac pipe off the regulator fuel pressure did not change even when I apply a vac with a mitivac

But if my fuel pressure is at 3.8 bar for what I can gather my regulator my standard reg has a safety open pressure relief at 4.0 bar and I think it's goin over dumping my pressure giving me pressure prob dunno

I'm lucky I'm a mechanic I already wiped the pump back out and checked and it's all sat right

I never had a problem with the Walbro only that it lasted 10 months ha

If anyone can help me still much appreciated

Did you manage to sort your fuel pressure issue out?

I've had the Roger Clark fuel pump fitted with the orignal subaru sock for a few weeks and it seems ok so far, I still need to test it with less than quarter of tank of fuel to make sure its picking up ok.

under quarter of a tank isnt why you change the pump mate,
its to ensure the fuel pressure doesnt drop as the old pump may have lost some of its efficiency, the new pumps do sometimes sit a few mm lower, but this is why people fit swirl pots.

Yes I know you change the fuel pump because it wears out. The reason I mentioned the quarter of a tank is because a user on scoobynet that has a roger clark pump mentioned that it wouldnt pick up fuel under a quarter of tank. Im hoping I dont have/get that problem.

ah, fair enough,
I know a few suffer under heavy lateral G`s,
it is a pain on track days keeping the fuel level up, as you obviously want the car as lite as possible, so remove spare wheel, jack etc, but then you lug a half tank of fuel round lol

I can now confirm that I have no issues with my Roger Clark 340lph fuel pump using the original subaru sock, got the fuel down to reserve and pick up is perfect.

lol, The Roger Clark pumps are more expensive than the Walbro.
