taking the plunge? Advice needed?!

I'm seriously considering buying my first Subaru. But going from a focus diesel 'work bus' I have a few questions!

I've seen a few with the pro drive pack, does this make a substantial difference?
In reviews I've read owners have stated high running costs. Is this just referring to fuel costs or are there other things to take into account?
I obviously want to enjoy it but could I get 30mpg on a commute of 35 miles which is part motorway part A roads?
How often do they need servicing? I've read oil and filter every 3750 miles, is this right?

From a focus diesel .... If you are considering buying your first Impreza. The first high running cost would be your "Insurance"

You best get a quote first.... Link: Insurance Companies

Re: taking the plunge? Advice needed?!

I bought my 2003 sit about a year ago.
I have always wanted one, so I too took the plunge.
Luckily, the only issues I have had are normal running costs.
The other issues are of my own choosing.
Coilovers, Graphics, Wheels, Anti lift kit, Roll cage, Seats.

Re: taking the plunge? Advice needed?!

the main costs ive found after owning 3 scoobys, are the obvious ones i.e insurance depending on your age, which makes a massive difference,no matter what no claims you've got( im paying 750 at the age of 43 for a 2006 sti). and fuel costs.you can achieve 30mpg but you'll have to drive like a granny, which is very hard to do and almost pointless.i would say ive averaged approx 22-25mpg with all 3 cars.ive changed my oil roughly every 6-8 months with decent oil/filter.i also have to say that all 3 imprezas ive owned have been the most reliable and pleasurable cars ive had....if you can afford one,go for it-you only live once my friend

Re: taking the plunge? Advice needed?!

Having recently bought my third scooby (a '55 plate STi) I would say to buy the best one you can afford. If like me you buy one and then sell it, you'll be disappointed with any other car regarding the handling. I have never felt as safe as when I am in my scooby. I even bought a brand new Juke, thinking this would snap me out of my need for a scooby but I can honestly say that once you've owned one you will never want any other make! Look on the net for insurance as they can vary but as Pete says it all depends on your age etc. I hope you get what you want :-)

Re: taking the plunge? Advice needed?!

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I'm 34. I checked a few insurance comparison sites. One started at 1150 but the other 680, although I've not checked with my own insurance company yet, if it only cost 700 fully comp I'd be happy with that!
I also get 45p a mile if it's work related travel which should cover it shouldn't it?
I've seen a few with prodrive pack around 2005 plate I like the look of. Does the prodrive make a significant difference or would a standard wrx do?
