iirc mines an opend deck,just hit 100k runs 336bhp and 330 torque all day,everyday,as long as the fluids are changed frequently,warmed up and cooled down properly,it'll be fine

Re: Are open decks really that bad?

are you sure your's is an open deck??
with a VF34 you've a potential max bhp of 350/360 same with the 440 injectors,standard bhp for yours is iro 275/280 bhp,you could well be iro 330ish,hard to say with out putting it on a set of rollers.

Re: Are open decks really that bad?

All JDM STi's from V2 had the open deck block. Here is a list of cars that came with the closed deck block;

WRX A/B (11/92 - 08/94)
STi V1 (01/94 - 07/95)
WRX/C Type RA (09/94 - 08/95)
WRX STi V2 Type RA (08/95 - 08/96)

Only the RA's had the closed deck for the final 2 years. The standard WRX/STi had already switched to open deck.

All cars after the above listed had open deck and continue to have them.

Re: Are open decks really that bad?

So what best why to strenthen up to keep power and reliablity? I have a another engine buts it's damaged the now it's got a ej20 Open deck with forge pistons and rods, titanium crank but, I think crank might need reground as play in cylinder 1 ! Don't know were to take , what to do,& what it might cost to fix? Might even break it! Hmm

Re: Are open decks really that bad?

it realy depends what you want and how far you want to tune, with a decent set of rods and pistons the open deck will run 400-420 ok. the limit on the standard engine isn;t the block normaly, its the rods or pistons. Alkso your gearbox is unlikley to take this sort of power, once you hit 350 then your looking at a new uprated gearbox, which aint cheap.

big power (500+) then closed deck is your best option, folks do get away with using semi closed deck blocks at 500, but some don't, i've seen them split apart during mapping due to not being able to take the required boost. it realy is pot luck
