More Power...

Hi guys, would like a bit more power out of my scoob, its a 1998 Uk turbo, pretty standard at mo, Ninja rear box and Green panel filter.. Would like to de-cat, as its still running both center and front pipe cats.. Im sure this has been covered many times before, but is it worth just removing one? If so which one? or is it pointless doing one without the other... Also Re mapping, what options are available for the 98 model? Obviously cost is an issue. Am I likely to cause any damage by de-catting without a re-map? (overboost etc). I understand power gains won't be as good without re-mapping..
Any input or ideas will be much appreciated.

Re: More Power...

A lot of the guys will tell you more to but car will overboost as you said when cats removed due to free flowing exhaust so Id remap it think few of the guys on here dont have it mapped for a full de-cat exhaust but to be safe Id remap it you can pass the Mot with just 1 cat in place also

Re: More Power...

other option if you don't want the hassle of "catting " once a year and a non scoob friendly MOT station go for a sport cat

Re: More Power...

Take out the down pipe cat from the turbo as this is the big one that causes most of the back pressure. the car will /should run fine with this removed. If you leave the smaller centre pipe CAT in the car will sail through an MOT as long as you get the cat nice and hot before the emission test. You can run your car without any cats but i suppose there is always a small chance of over boosting. My old MY99 ran a full decat fine and boost increased to 1 bar. You could get a boost gauge and knock link fitted as i did to keep an eye on things.
the upside to the above is more power and boost, the down side could be the car may be slightly less smooth when driving and you may get flat spots. every car is different i suppose.
A UK MY98 should be able to use ECUTEK software on the ecu so the car could get remapped if extra funds allow and then you would see much better and safer gains all round

Re: More Power...

Thanks very much for the advice guys, I was under the impression that the ecu on my car could not be easily re-mapped, it needs another board added or something?.. I have not spoken to anyone to confirm this tho.. Could anyone recommend a company/person i could speak to regarding re-map, I am in the West Sussex area... Cheers Again.

Re: More Power...

As brum brum says above,i got a 1999 uk turbo, fully decatted, with uprated fuel pump,k & n panel filter ,forge bov,and afterburner vortex, and had no running probs so far ,just done master reset and car still pops and bangs ,with occasional flame outs once in a while.Looking to get a remap before xmas and see if it makes the difference that everyone says it does.
P.S took mine for mot on monday passed with 1 advisory(crack on windscreen)

a MY98 ECU should be compatable with the ECUTEK software that most people go for, although the 98 may be a cross over year on ecu's. You would have to give your vin plate number to a mapper so they can check. As for mappers in the S.East. Two names come to mind....... Simon of www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk and Bob Rawle of..... BRDevelopments . Everyone one has there own favourite mapper although there seems to be more and more of them appearing,,, So Beware on who you choose! I'm not sure where Jolly green monster are based, but Bob Rawle is in Swindon and maps my car. If your car is not compatable with the ECUTEK software then the other most popular option is a replacement ecu such as the SIMTEK ecu which is all singing - all dancing and is the must have scooby accessary of the moment . Obviously this gets more expensive.

My 99UK classic poped n banged impressively whilst running a full decat, but this disapeared after a remap.
And Yes Slider - it will make a huge difference once the car has been mapped. You will drive home a completely different feeling and performing car.

What is the VIN number on the right hand wing as you look at the engine bay?

That should indicate your engine/ecu type

Another clue would be the Blow off valve... is mounted on the front of your intercooler or on a pipe underneath and made of black plastic?

If it's and early 98 you will need to replace the ecu... if it's a late 98 you can have a re-map ECUTEK recomended and Bob Rawle and Jollygreen monster are well thought of... I use Bob Rawle of BRDEVELOPMENTS

If you have an early 98 then SIM TEK ecu is all bells and whistles... more expensive but you get dual maps, a MAF less system, a knock warning, change gear light, launch mode, anti-lag etc if you want...

Either way as BRUMBRUM says.... you will have a very very different animal when a good re-map is done...

Good luck and let us know what you decide

Nobby
