Question Power Gain Mods for a '96 Wrx

Hi all

New here as you can see but in need of some new ideas for gaining some more power out of my 1996 Wrx. It currently has a high flow cat, 3" exhaust turbo back and is running 1 bar boost at this stage. What other mods could I do to acheive some good power?

I was thinking Link ECU, FMI plus a proper Dyno tune but what else is there. Could I possibly change the injectors, fuel rails etc etc

Porting is an option at a later date but I am after mods that can be done without hauling the whole engine out.

Sorry if I am asking silly questions but I am a girl and still learning every day about my car

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

re the fuel rails and injectors. if you're looking at serious power upgrades (ans sounds like yo are) these would certainly need upgrading. Go for the Parallel fuel rail mod as it makes fueling safer for the engine as cylinder 3 has a habit of being underfuelled and going pop and new injectors allow a lot more room for power mods in the future. Something else to consider is an oil pump upgrade as the standard pump is known to fail and is a major cause of bottom end failiure on Imprezas.

Where you from in NZ? One of my best mates lives in Christchurch and he is a Scooby nut. Doesn't own one (yet) though.

Hi all

Thanks for the info and 2002Pete I will have a look at the tuning guides you listed, what is your clubsub name btw?

Rikimaru, I am actually in Chch Good info given so thanks heaps for that... I was never aware that cylinder 3 was like that so I have learnt something new today. And as for your mate, I would love more contacts of people who know what they are doing so if there is a way to contact him (if he is ok with that) then that would be much appreciated.

Tidgy, I have the high flow cat and my car is quite loud already so not wanting to decat it completely if that is what you were meaning

Would recommend a lightweight flywheel its a really noticeable modification thats often overlooked-std flywheel weights about 12kg`s mines 7kg though i think you can go as low as 4.8-5kg though risk a poor or irattic idle then, the car will pick up quicker though wont show as a power gain in bhp as its just reducing the weight the engine has to turn immediately, so less effort to spin quicker acceleration/faster revving-could tell the difference in mine within about 1/4 mile, would never go bk to a std one now.

I would say that it is common enough that for the price of an after market oil pump you'll be buying an awful lot of piece of mind. It is after all one of the major causes for bottom ends letting go on imprezas.
