Gearbox help

Hi guys, been a member for donkey's but this is my first post.
Looks like my gearbox has gone, had been out last night and was on my way home and whilst in fifth gear put my foot down and immediately got a loud knocking, scraping noise. Stopped the car and fine while stood, was about half a mile from home so tried freewheeling but that still makes the grinding/knocking noise so limped home.
Gonna get it checked today to make sure but had similar problem with my old wrx a few years ago.
My car is a 98 type r, its had 2.5 conversion with uprated internals 6k ago, got vf28, decat, headers etc and is making 290 at the wheels with 355lbs torque. What options do i have for a new gearbox, dont want the new one to go bang and probably gonna change the turbo and get fmic in the future so looking at more power.
Any help would be appreciated, thx.

Re: Gearbox help

afriad to say but at 350ftlb im not surprised its gone at all.

your options are pretty limited unless you want it to go again, either 6 speed or uprated 5 speed.

Re: Gearbox help

Had a word with the guys at ppg but at 3.5k+ its over my budget, scoobyclinic do an uprated gearset, anyone any experience of what these gearsets are like?. Otherwise it looks like its gonna be a six speed conversion. What power can they actually handle and anyone know a decent place to pick one up, seems most of em online only do a very limited warranty and then only if they fit it.

Re: Gearbox help

Dont seem to be able to put a new post up so apologies for using this post.

I have a WRX STi Type UK Prodrive and am new to the whole Subaru 'thing'. In 2 months the cam shaft sensor has gone and now reverse wont select. It just makes a grinding noise as you raise the clutch then kicks the gear out but all 6 fwd gears select and work ok.

Someone suggested the linkage may be loose. It coincided with selecting reverse instead of 6th so whilst I'm not sure does anyone have any suggestions?

Please and thank you. Les
