Question "Auto" setting for heater control on 2004 facelift

Maybe I'm being a bit dumb here but I can't get my head round what the "auto" setting on the left hand dial of my heater controls does! The car is 2004 WRX (facelift) and it's the dial that determines where the air is directed (i.e footwell, windscreen etc.) Any ideas, please?

The only "auto" setting i have on my 02 WRX is on the fan control dial. The fan speed is adjusted automatically in accordence with the air temperature inside and outside the passenger compartment, the intensity of sunlight and other factors.

Re: "Auto" setting for heater control on 2004 facelift

Thanks for that. My 2004 FACELIFT has an automatic option for both speed (i.e. the middle dial) and "direction" (i.e. the lefthand dial). This is part of the climate control sttings I assume. I can see why the speed one needs an automatic setting but not the "direction. Hope the attache dpic helps
