Speedo sticking at ~50mph

The speedo on my car is sometimes sticking at ~50mph. Normally happens after spirited, but not on the edge driving. The rev counter is fine. Do the speedo and rev counter use the same linkage? If so I assume it's a problem with the actual clock or conection to the clock. Anyone have any ideas?

Suspect the best thing to do would be to take it out, have a look and make sure there's no crud jamming it or loose connections. Anything in particular I ought to be looking for? How easy is it to take the speedo out (early 1998 car)? Anyone got the relevant bits of the workshop manual they could send me? Is the speedo a sealed unit to stop people clocking the car or is it fairly easy to work on?

My wrx 1995 import is doing exactly the same thing. All of the gauges work apart from the speedo one and it wont go over 50 mph.

Have you managed to sort your out????
