Hi mate.

Only problems I can see with imports really are generally higher insurance premiums, possible difficulty getting parts and a permanent grin.

They are better cars than the UK cars in standard form, especially if you can stretch to an STi.

Re: dielema

I'd go for a Type RA if I was looking for a good track day car

Re: dielema

Check for a full service history,
Check the brake discs, as these can often get scored - meaning that both they and the pads will have to be replaced.
Turbo models have usually been driven hard, so check that the clutch isn't slipping when you change gear.
Check for any crap modifications
Check for any knocking noise on start-up.
Check for uneven panel gaps, indicating poor accident repairs. Also look for uneven tyre wear, showing suspension misalignment.
A smoky exhaust could indicate burnt-out turbo oil seals.

This checklist should help - Subaru Impreza - Buying Checklist

Re: dielema

Something I would check in addition to above is any crunching through the gears. Classic boxes are notoriously weak and worn synchro's seem to be a fairly common problem. I get crunching between 4th & 5th because of this and I believe another RA owner on here has/had the same problem.

Absolutely agree but think you'll be lucky to find an Import with full service history predating import into the UK. Virtually every Impreza, Evo etc I looked at in Japan had patchy history at best including my RA, though I was lucky that despite having few stamps in the service book it had loads of receipts and all of the Shaken check sheets. My car went to Autobacs for oil and fluid changes (as do many cars as they stock Motul and the like) and I did plugs and filters etc myself so no stamps.

I would certainly say however look for service history subsequent to being imported and receipts for any mods done.

Re: dielema

As above really, I'd go for a classic import. Do all the usual checks and hope you have fun on the track
