replica sti strut brace bad fit

just got my rep. sti strut brace for my '99 classic. went to fit it, attached one bracket and the other was about 6 inches away from the sus. turret towards the front of the car.
had to bend the brace back to get the bracket over the turret.
its all bolted down ok but there is a slight bend on the rear part of the brace.
anyone else had this? got it of ebay
surely it should just drop straight on.
its the alley one with the pink brackets

the brackets are right.

Re: replica sti strut brace bad fit

If ur brackets fit ok could the straight part be cut down and re tapped to fit maybe ?
It may only want a few mm off the length to make it fit.

Re: replica sti strut brace bad fit

it almost seems as if its been welded at the wrong angle, only slightly but enough to have to bend it to fit.
it was only 40 +p+p so i wont mind messing with it to make it fit properly. i'd be sending it back otherwise.
i'll see if i can post some picks tomorrow.

the companies ebay feedback was 100%, even showing people who had the same strut brace with no probs. just my luck to get a duff one!

still, its fitted and it aint too bad, just a slight bend on it.

If the companies ebay feedback was 100%. It could be a new-age 01-07 strut brace he sold you ?

Re: replica sti strut brace bad fit

I wouldn't be bending it to fit. The pressure thins the metal and puts strain on the welds. You may find it snaps when under pressure on a demanding road.
Pop it off and send it back mate.

Re: replica sti strut brace bad fit

in pic 2 is the brace bending in due to the extra forces on it ?
If so u want to make sure it doesnt rub when u drive as the engine does move a fair bit.

Re: replica sti strut brace bad fit

no mate. i had to fit the r/h bracket then bend the strut brace back towards the w/screen about 4inch's to get it over the l/h sus. top, if that makes sense!

tbh i'll prob take it off and either doctor it so it'll fit straight on or send it back.
bit of a hassle tho.
thanks to all for your replies, it would seem that my strut prob is unusual.

Re: replica sti strut brace bad fit

think i've sussed it. the brackets are the same rather than one left and one right.
the pic on ebay shows left and right hand brackets.
