MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

Hi All
I have a problem with my beloved wagon. At random intervals it just dies! (bluuuuur etc) when I touch the throttle it will fire again, but no power at all, only running on 1 and a half cylinders.
This usually happens on smooth roads, invariably in the middle of a busy roundabout. If I can get the thing to the side of the road, it sometimes ticks over, hunting rhythmically between 500 and 1000 rpm. (brrruuum. . . bluurr. . bruum. . . bluurr etc).
Could the fuel pump have an intermittent fault? Loose relay?
Aaargh!
please help me before I scream.
Nickel.

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

Hi All

Hot or cold, there is no difference, it just packs up. (bluurr. . bruh . . bruh. .bruum. . bruh . buh . buh etc then stop. turn off ignition, try again. tiddley bruum, then OK for another mile or 200 miles. This has probably been experienced by someone in the past: I need my adrenaline top-up, What are the likely faults that have been experienced in the past?
Please help me, sob, sniffle etc.
Nickel

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

Doesn't sound like a MAF problem to me. I would start with the electrics, with coil pack top of my list as it is affecting all cylinders. Also check lead and plugs t be sure they are working correctly and in good condition. Also check fuel and air filters as if they are mucky and clogged that will seriously affect the running. Could be a fueling issue I guess, so might be worth checking the wiring to the fuel pump isn't perished anywhere and that the fuel pump is getting power if the electric's are all fine.

Has it had a full service recently and is it serviced regularly?

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

I had a full service 7000 miles ago including cambelt etc. On my mate's 'Launch X431' OBD box of tricks, he cleared all faults. I then took it out for a drive until it stopped again, and we put the OBD on it to see what had changed. There was a list of faults as long as your arm, none of which I could see as having any direct or tenuous connection with the major issue. It is quite possible that one fault starts a sequence of reports, but which one?
I'm going to make a thorough check of all connectors under the bonnet, to see if there is an open circuit crimp somewhere. Then it's into the back with the voltmeter to see if the pump has a problem.
I was hoping that someone else who had experienced this trouble had found the root cause!
(Japanese cars are usually ultra reliable)

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

do the obd test again and bring us the list of faults, ud be surprised what a few lateral thinking minds could come up with.

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

I have done another clear/reset then drive around til it stops. As suggested I have taken a copy of the OBD print and typed it in(out?). I believe that the WRX STI wagons were taken off the end of the production line as automatics surplus to requirement for conversion to the STI spec: ie remove auto engine replace with special build manual item. This may explain some of the OBD references to torque converters etc. So, if ti works, here is the printout:

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

According to those codes your car is about to implode because apparently everything that can go wrong with a car is wrong with yours. I'd say however most of those are proably stored codes from days gone by. Might be worth doing an ECU reset and going for a run and see what happens. Any persistent faults should show up again.

Not a bad shout - try a different ecu to see if it is ecu related.

Re: MY98 JDM WRX STI cutting out

Hi All. As in comment #7, I did the full reset and cleared the memory, then drove it till it failed. The list of 42 codes was taken directly the thing stopped!
In comment #2, stiimpreza1984 suggested MAF fault. I have since heard from a Bell and Colville trained technician that this was a regular fault on classic imprezas.
A mate has offered to swap his MAF sensor with mine to see if the fault is with the car or with the sensor. If the fault moves to his car, bingo! If not, then I have to start digging further.
Unfortunately I keep having to go to work, so internet time is limited.
