pumpkin weigh in.

well folks, i've finally picked the monster off the vine. it took three of us to lift and transport it up to the allotment main shed for the weigh in last sunday. it's looking like a main contender for the annual prize. the winner will announced this weekend at the allotment bonfire party. it must be said that it hasn't been a good year for pumpkins in general as pumpkins fair better in warm summer conditions.

on the weigh-in, there were not enough weights to tip the scale, so a bag of compost had to be used as well . at one point my partner stood on the scales in hope of tipping the balance but that was not enough.

it weighed in at a satisfying 137 lbs, nearly 10 stone!

the photo below shows the proud growers (myself and old man senior).

if you want to get an idea of the size(as a photo does it little justice) compare it to the size of one of our heads in the photo.

germinated in april and planted out after a few weeks. the plant grows at an alarming rate. it sends out huge thick vines and produces leaves larger than the wheels n tyres on your car. once the main vines get to about 20ft long there will be male and female flowers appearing. best at this time to pollinate the female flower with the stamen of the male flower to help speed things up. once you've managed to do this the small bump at the back of the female flower begins growing at an astonishing rate. first a golf ball, then cricket ball, then small football. at his point i went on holiday for one week and when i got back the pumpkin had reached the size of a basket ball.
i restricted the plant to growing just one fruit. every couple of days i went around the plant picking off other small pumpkins, i did this until the day i picked the whopper. the secret to my success........, lots of horse and chicken poo, and lots of liquid fertilizer with different amount of nitragen, phosphorous and potassium, depending on the point in the plants growth (the science bit).

my father will not let me grow one next year as it took over most of the allotment plot. so next year i'm going for a giant marrow. .... watch this space!!!
regards, Andrew.
