Under bonnet cooling

Hi all

while i was messin around under the bonnet i noticed blanking plates uderneath the two small bonnet vents and what i can only describe as a restrictor plate covering part of the intercooler scoop.

my query is, would there be any problems if i removed the blanking plate on the vent above the induction kit and enlarged/removed the restrictor plate in the intercooler scoop?

tom

hi i have heard that removing them can cause problems with water making its way in though these vents but i must stress this is only what i have heard.

As above and thats with the plates in place.

With basic induction cones the water comes through the bonnet vents and soaks the filter. had this prob last week driving down the m74 coming into the services, car lost major power and was misfiring at low to medium revs as the engine couldn't sook enough air in through a wet filter. Not good.

The plates are there for a reason.. ie peeps like us who put uprated cones on or at the basic level to protect the sensors from water spray.

I have mine off in the summer as rain is fairly unusual in summer (but unbearably humid) and temps are usually in the mid to high 30's in Tokyo area so every bit of cooling helps. As soon as summers over they go back on again.

Im gonna experiment with it at some point either using spacers for the plate underneath to be dropped down so theres a gap but block the gap in the direction of filter/maf if ya get me or possibly making a new plate all together still with a gap between that and the bonnet using spacers but no gap at the bk of the vent so that rain cant be forced in when bein driven, i reckon there`d be no problem if done right(basing this around being room on inside to lower the vent covers-aint looked into it that much)

Short of that one of them curved alloy heatshields to protect filter, could actually make one yourself to protect the maf multiplug etc.
