More power capt'n..
Hi there,
I have a basically standard MY99 UK Turbo 2000. It has a Prodrive backbox but not decatted. Without D-catting is it possible to get 250-260 bhp without compromising reliabiity of my baby? Is there such a thing as cheaper options? he car is v. reliable and want to keep it that way. I just wished it had that little more OOMPH... ![]() Any advise would be v.much apreciated. cheers Angelo. |

Only changes ive got on mine are induction kit/magnecor plug leads/bailey dump valve/samco intercooler hoses(the y piece one under the top mount makes a slight difference to flow as its a wider bore than the std plastic ones that are unreliable and occasionally split or leak)lightened flywheel/exedy clutch however the most noticeable mod ive done were the decat.
If youre not using NGK plugs try them aswell NGK pfr6b (halfords sell em if youre struggling) dont know wether you`d change your own sparkplugs however in my 2000 uk turbo made the world of difference(had blitz irridiums in before aswell)Gapped mine to 0.8mm runs lovely.

once you've done the air filter, exhaust (full decats best) then you start to get to the stage of needing to spend money to get power, well larger sums anyway.
your then into the relms of new turbos, different intercoolers, bigger fuel pump etc etc, also you have to start thinking about other things such as cooling engine oil, will the ecu take it etc etc and the list goes on. your car will always be as weak as your weakest part, mines was the gearbox, and it broke so got an uprated one. how far you go realy depends on how far you wanna go and how deep your wallet is. this is how far i've gone lol ![]()

have you considered a sports CAT? I know Phill-Type R had one fitted and was still able to pass the MOT and reach about 350bhp.
Could also fit a tmic from an sti, that may help you a little but like Tidgy said after that you`re looking at turbo`s etc

Wouldnt personally have spent what tidgy has on a uk turbo-i think youve always gotta think what the cars worth or its good/bad points if i intended searching for the power youve got tidgy, an were a scooby lover no matter what(like your good self) i`d have just sorted the uk box/sourced another if totally knackered an sold the car, then gone for a classic sti then spent some ££`s on it.
If it hadnt have been for the insurance at the time i`d have bought an sti in the first place.

although it depends how far your taking it, mine has got very few standard parts left on it, so had i gone sti the initial outlay would have been more and the mods the same cos the parts fitted are all uprated parts even compared to the sti.

Thanks for the input guys,
If it was up to me I would have bought an STI but as you say insurance and bank manager says "NO"... Still I just wanted that little bit more taking the car to around 250-260 break... Would a remap not get me there... Then there is the other niggle of differentiial... I would like to put a little more power to the rear wheels... I bought the wrong car me thinks.. but I stll love it.. |

exhaust fileter and remap shouldn`t get you far off 260bhp. My uk turbo was fully decatted and ran at 234bhp I think. It hadn`t been remapped and was on standard air filter too. imho if you don`t want to go the full decat route, get the sports cat, and an air filter and then get it remapped. It should get you somewhere near to where ou want to be without spending too much
