Unhappy Head gasket - its knackered!! :(

It just has to happen, right when you dont want it too eh?

Well yep, after fitting the new rad, the temp guage was going up and the fans where spinning... We had water out the back of the exhaust and white smoke as well.. Oh crap...

Please can I have some sensible suggestions of what is best to replace when doing a head gasket, as I hope its not gonna be a common occurance of the engine being in two...

I've been suggested:

Metal head gaskets
Cam Belt.

Is there anything else that I would be in good interest in changing whilst its in pieces? I really dont want to have to have the car in bits for too long.. Trudi is sooooo not happy!!

Many thanks guys

Oh and rough costs as well

if it's an issue getting it to the right garage, can you not get someone to toe you half mile down road, then phone AA, and be relayed to the garage that "you were on your way to" . or is that a useless suggestion? will the AA/RAC do that?
it may give you more options for phoning around and getting a cheaper quote somewhere else in the country.
probably not helpful, just trying to help and sympathise.

Its been using water for a bit Ed, so I guess it was only a matter of time...

Dont see the point in selling it, as I simply wont get anything near to what I've paid out on it, besides, better the devil you know and all of that

I'm gonna give the AA a call to see if they can pick it up and take it to a mates place, where its gonna get sorted so I'll see what they say first... If not, I think my mate has a trailer so its not a problem

you will never get back what you paid, if i do have to sell mine I think about £17500 is a good figure, remember that I have spent nearly £35k on getting her to what she is!

only prob with imports bud, bottom drops out of the market, probably best option it to way up the cost of repair, then what you've spent on buying it,mods, servicing, runnig, you'll have lost serious cash hand over fist, and will never recoupe it,imho,i'd repair and then sell for best price, hate to say it mate, but seems to me your just wasting money.......

How much should it cost in total to do Alyn?

I'm not sure what is required to be done with a head gasket.

I'm not sure where the heads are sent to get skimmed and what parts are needed.

Is there anyway you could give me a PM with all the bits and costs that you'd supply it for?

Thing is Ed, this is the only thing that has gone wrong with the car, the rest has been mod's and for me to sell it now, would make so little sense it would just be stupid.
The car is fine, its just a head gasket

Well so do I mate as I'm hoping to surprise Trudi on the 15th December by turning up there, so hopefully it'll work out. I just wonder if the car might be done by then

The quote has gone up a bit to £1500 since the uprated oil pump and cam belt and a few others are getting done...
Here's a list so far of what's on the cards:

Genuine Subaru Complete Engine Gasket Set. £355.96
Cometic Multilayer competition cylinder head gasket. X2 £211.50
ARP Head Stud Kit (Uprated Studs) £183.68
GReddy Subaru Impreza WRX Timing Belt (Uprated) £156.67
RCMS Modified Oil Pump £175.10
Grey Bond Sump Sealer £10.00
Heads Skimmed £85.00

Its not a pretty bill, but I've had much worse for the mod's!!

Anyone else got any suggestions or thoughts for upgrades whilst the engine is out? Its also being stripped completely to check out the crank and bearing as well... May as well see if more needs doing since its all out anyways (I need to thank Richy B for that idea )
