ABS fault 52 (motor to motor relay)

ABS fault 52 (motor to motor relay)

After finding out the ABS bulb had been removed from the speedometer and I replaced it to find that I had multiple ABS codes:
Code 22 Front Right ABS Sensor - fixed by replacing electric/magnetic sensor
Code 29 Any One of ABS Sensors - Fixed by replacing Front right axle as it was missing the speed sensor ring.


I am now left with code 52 Motor to Motor relay off failure, this relay is inside the ABS pump module and is not serviceable. Is it possible for a broken/damaged ground wire to cause this fault or is it a case of replacing it with a second hand unit?


I've seen Subaru about this and they stated that a shorted ground would only set off codes for the sensors. I just want a 2nd opinion before I waste more money.

The car is a MY2000 Impreza Turbo 2000.

I've googled this faulty and some people have found that the ground wire is near the power steering pump for the ABS and gets rusty, see link below.

I can not see any wiring going near the power steering pump. All I can see is the wiring harness on the left of the pump with a cover over it which I am having difficulties removing and all the brake pipes going to and from the pump.

I think I found the ground wire, I followed the wiring harness into the wheel arch by the air filter box and it comes back on itself, there is 2 ground wires going into 1 connection and it is bolted to the ABS pump mount right near the charcoal canister.

I will update this thread once I've confirmed it for sure.

Have you had a look thru the PDF workshop manuals for wiring, see where the local ground point is, in the diagrams there are a few that just show the ground points.

I completed forgot about those manuals. I'll check them in the morning. The ground bolt that I found is completely corroded, I've got a replacement stainless steel one for it.



I've also come across another ground bolt directly below the ABS pump on the side (directly opposite the spark plug/HT Lead at the front of the engine) which is in good condition but its used for the radiator fan.

I've read through the service manuals, the ground wire is right next to the charcoal canister for the ABS, I tried cleaning all the contacts and replacing the bolt and it didn't work. I've bought another ABS pump with the same factory part/serial number.

Just for anyone else reading this and needs to replace the pump according to Alyn at AS Performance the only numbers that need to match are the Subaru part number and the serial number directly underneath it. I asked about the other references as mine has D14 on it he states its a date stamp. Basically my Subaru part no. is 27531AC060 then Serial no. 110 000 40550 then it has NIPPON AD6 LTD underneath.

I'll updated thread once its been fitted.

Nowt is ever easy, they can be a right pig to bleed as well from complete empty,
On a VX I had they had to operate the ABS pump when bleeding them from new.
