Knocking noise - not bottom end

Guys

Wonder if anyone can help me...

I have developed a knocking noise on my UK 2003 WRX.

I don't think it's the big end bearings for the following reasons... the bottom end went about 6 months ago and I had it rebuilt - this is not the same noise, nor in the same place. Also there are no metallic parts on the oil dispstick. Additonally, when I had the rebuild completed I had the forged Mahle pistons and con rods installed which I was told would give better reliabilty.

The noise itself is quite loud (quite alarming!!) and it sounds like it's from cylinder 1/turbo area if that helps.

Any ideas from this basic description? I will try and get a video clip of it up over the weekend.

Oh... some additional info - the car is only idling at like 400-500rpm.

Re: Knocking noise - not bottom end

Get a compression test carried out to rule that out

Re: Knocking noise - not bottom end

Well I've gotta be careful as if the cambelt or the cambelt tensioner has gone (which would affect compresssion) that should be covered under warranty surely? As they were only replaced 2000 miles ago when the rebuild was done... I'd like to think a tensioner or belt would last longer than 2000 miles lol...

I will have to get it to the garage that did the work and they will have to diagnose the problem... although the risk is that they will say it is somethig that is not their fault!!

Sounds like tappets/hydraulic lifters to me, my classic sounded like that a while ago, luckily an oil and filter changed and driving using hardly any boost for just over a week cleared it. I would still get a compression test done first.
