2nd gear boost spluttering

I have a standard MY99 Turbo 2000, which has just started a strange boost problem, it only happens in 2nd gear, the revs climb smoothly but it splutters. I've just had the spark plugs changed about a week ago to NGK Iridium NGK-PFR6B.

Any ideas. Thanks in Advance.

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

just tried doing a ECU reset and a bit of test drive to a mates, at first it seemed ok, then when I pulled up there is a knocking/tapping noise coming from around driver side middle.

Got a feeling this is going to be an expensive repair, was just about to get it resprayed as well

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

ecu reset wouldnt couse the engine to knock.

checke your oil level.

whats the last time you had an oil change ?

did you change the filter?

if yes was it an oem filter?

did you put the right grade oil ?

do you get the same tapping noise in the morning when the engine is cold.?

Hi, Before I start, I don't do any work myself on the car, I get a subaru mechanic to do it when its due.

I didnt say the ECU reset caused the knocking, im just giving an update so far as i thought it may have been something simple.

Oil level is full using Millers 10w-40

last service which included oil change, filter was approx 18 months ago by previous owner. I cant tell if they are genuine as the service logs don't have much detail, just the basics.

Its never made this noise before not even in the cold (owned it for 14 months) so its not piston slap, the noise is constant from idle through to gradual revving.

Judging from the sound and location I think its the con-rod near the turbo.

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

Anyone know what size bore my pistons are for a standard MY99 classic, as there is a seller on ebay that has 3 sizes 92mm, 92.5mm, 93mm?

Thanks

before you start thinking of buying pistons wait and see what the problem is.

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

It doesn't sound like your big ends sounds more like tapping rather then knocking.

sounds more like one of your shims have flied out the bucket.

This normally happens on high RPM when your giving it some stick in lower gears and red lining it. If its a wrx am sure its shims over buckets. the shim looks a bit more thicker then a10 pence piece and sits under the cam in the bucket.

and if it is your con rod you got more chances of number 3 piston con rod going which is on the other side to your starter so don't panic.

just get some one who knows what he is doing to inspected it first it might just be some thing small like the shim and shouldn't cost you a lot to buy new one its around 25 to 30 new from dealers and you don't have to take the cylinder heads of the engine nether.

get the rocker cover taken off and then shims checked if there's any missing out the buckets if one is missing it will be some where in the head you cant miss it.

like Tidgy says get it checked first.

don't get ripped off by some one just telling you its the bottom end and there's nothing wrong with it. that will put a hole in your pocket.

ccsworks:
Its a standard UK MY99 Turbo 2000 so its close to wrx. I change gear at about 5000rpm when driving it hard as its very high mileage 128000

Pilot:
Im going to try and get it looked at tomorrow.

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

with regular oil change 5000 rpm shouldn't really do any big damage but saying that you have got a bit of mileage depending on what kind hands its been through previously.

but like the lads are saying get it looked at and see how it goes and let us know.

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

Just had it looked at, been told its a stuck tappet probably because of wrong grade oil by previous owner. Getting an oil change done tomorrow then compression test next week as they are fully booked.

Re: 2nd gear boost spluttering

If it is that and that is the problem its an Hydraulic Lifter (bucket) stock with no shim on top of it like i mentioned in my earlier post.

there's a gap between the cam and the hydraulic lifter/bucket because the shim has flied out and the cam is hitting the bucket instead of the shim with to much gap in between them that might be the tapping noise.

This all so effects the fuel not burning right because one of your valve is not opening fully and its shutting faster wither its inlet (fuel) or outlet (exhaust) this might explain the spluttering.

But lets hope it is some thing small like that you will save your self some money you wont know for sure till it ends up in the garage.
