annoying intermitent rattle

hi all right then, i have a 1995 uk turbo and over the last few days its developed a rattle that last for 25-30 ish secs then goes quiet for the same amount of time. it sounds to be coming from the turbo side of the engine towards the rear of the head. the car has a decat downpipe td05 turbo and full 3.5 stainless exhaust sti top mount and dont know what else. this is my second scooby and all was good untill a few days ago.

tidy looking motor ..

could be a heat shield rattling,a bit of piston slap(worn rings) or something lose n vibrating.

Re: annoying intermitent rattle

hi bud thanks for the reply, yer ive been thinking this aswell, my heat sheilds are shot and ive been chasing the noise round the engine bay as it seems to come from everywhere but me and the lads at work have pinpointed it to around the top oil feed to the turbo/ rear of os head. kind of worried as i can see it costing a shed load to fix but the car is too good to break as it has loads of rare bits on it and the last owner did mention sti type ra engine but i have no proof of this except he worked for a scooby garage/tuners. im in the trade as a mechanic and all the signs/ numbers do sugest sti engine. this also feels alot faster than my old v4 prodrive which was 278 bhp.

Re: annoying intermitent rattle

is it only when you first start it up, or each time you start it?

Re: annoying intermitent rattle

every time i start it even when its warmed up abit, ive been doing a lot of little runs in it over the last week but have always warmed it up and let it cool down since ive owned it. if i put a scope on the engine the bottom end and valve train sound sweet as but putting the scope on the turbo's top oil feed banjo bolt and you can hear the ticking clear as day. would a failing oil pump cause this kind of symptoms? many thanks for help rich

Re: annoying intermitent rattle

it may be a blocked breather/oil feed pipe...a pump shouldn't cause that "ticking" problem..
