check engine light after timing belt change

Hello
I had to change the timing belt for my Impreza 2.5i 2007. After about 20km I got a check engine light. The Mechanic (not subaru; we live remote in the north of canada there is no subaru dealership) put the scan on and the error was a misfire. So he said I have to change the spark plugs and the wires, which I got him to do.
Shortly after the check engine light was on again.
Is it possible that he didn't do the timing right in the first place?

Thank you very much

Daniel

Re: check engine light after timing belt change

Misfire could be the spark plug gap size, pish fuel quality, under hard boost driving conditions could also cause this. Had one recently on mine,

Re: check engine light after timing belt change

Thanks.
But would you rule out that the timing is not exactly set since the timing belt got changed?

Hi, they are just common causes but only suggestions. Sorry I don't know what you mean regarding the timing.

The car normally is seriously done on power if the belt is fitted a tooth out. How does it feel after the work

Re: check engine light after timing belt change

I was worried that the work with the timing belt wasn't done properly. One tooth out or so...
The power seems still to be good. The only difference I have noticed is when the car is idling. It is not steady.
Today for some time the light was off and came on again after about 30km.
In all 3 cases that the check engine light came on, it was in low rpm.
2 times when I started the engine and one time driving in low rpm.

Thank you!

find out what code it is and post it up so we can try and work it out. Wondering was a sensor disturbed when the work was being done

The error code for the first time was 'miss fire cylinder 2' the second time it was 'miss fire cylinder 4'
Thanks!

Re: check engine light after timing belt change

I tried now for 2000k to drive with premium fuel.

Just to rule it out. The gas mileage for sure is better but again the check engine light came on twice and is on since the last 1000k.

Re: check engine light after timing belt change

No more check engine light yeah!!!

Finally the mechanic decided to review his work.
He found out that he missed to align the timing belt with one pulley.
He said it was only one tooth off.

I drove over 3000km having this situation.
Do I have to worry that something got damaged?

Thank you,

Dan
