Cooling System

Hi, does anyone know how the cooling system 'tops itself up' via the coolant reservoir? Last night my '53 WRX overheated and on checking the radiator filler it was empty but the reservoir bottle was full? There seems to be no hoses coming from the bottle, just the 'overflow' hose into the top of the bottle?
Any help much appreciated.

Re: Cooling System

UPDATE: The coolant I am putting in the radiator filler is finding its way into the reservoir bottle? i.e I fill the rad filler, drive for a few miles and on checking the reservoir is almost overflowing and the rad filler is empty again?? Any ideas or suggestions??!! Im well confused

Re: Cooling System

at a guess fella,i'd say you've an airlock in the cooling system, when you top up again, have the engine running, blowers on full and deflect to the windscreen, that will get the fluid round the system and will gradually force out any trapped air..keep topping up until the the level.. stays at the desired level

Re: Cooling System

Thanks for that Pilot, been having a read of some other threads and was going to try bleeding the system of air. But am i right in thinking the 'reservoir' bottle doesnt actually top the system up its just an 'expansion' bottle?

Re: Cooling System

thats correct, fill the header tank (drivers side of engine) with engine running and also top up expansion tank then the pressure will build n force the air out,if your doing a full system drain,ie: remove the drain plug in the rad, pour a lite or water in the header tank, then add 2litres of coolant, litre of water, same of coolant and then you should be able to presurise the system and then adjust accordingly..

And leave the cap off of the rad filler with the engine running etc??
