WRX Classic Auto

Hi, after spending the last 3 months trying to decide if I should scrap my 96 WRX auto, sell it for spares or just stick it in a barn and forget about it...I took it for an MOT....and it (amazingly) passed!

Just 2 advisorys, front pads and rear anti roll bar bushes.

And whilst out on a run with it last night I remembered how much I like it, ok its an auto and wont beat anyone off the lights but it makes me grin!

So, there are a few problems, the first of which I wanted to ask about on here...

When the engine is cold, and up to almost normal running temp, there is a tapping sound coming from the cam cover nearest the turbo, some people have told me its a rod and the engine is scrap but the noise goes when it is warm and I have done 6000 miles in this car with that noise on start up.

With a stethoscope I can tell it is a top end knock, nearest the turbo. Is this a hydraulic lifter worn and causing the noise? or are these solid with shims?

Any input most welcome!

Re: WRX Classic Auto

Its your hydraulic tappets they will make noise until the engine worms up to the right temperature normally happens when the car is off road for some time.
Change the oil filter and the oil you be fine make sure you put the right recommended grade oil in the car once your hydraulic tappets fill up with the right oil it will be fine. Your old oil is probably clogged up and the oil doesn’t travel through up to the top of the engine till it worms and thins out. hope that helps.
