Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

could be a cracked pipe, or a split in one of the hoses, pretty common after a certain age, get it checked out asap to double check though

Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

btw what do you guys reckon price is to get gaskets done, 1000 or so?, they gotta replace timming belt water pump etc, what else if getting this done would you recommend i do when its getting all this done, also rocker gasket has a leak so that aswell, will it be ok after all is done?

Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

Hard to price it as mechanics can charge differently although 1000 seems a bit steep!

Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

it is hard to price up for head gasket failure as you have to strip engine down to prove this, as it could be cracked block etc, i also wouldnt recommend just head gaskets to be done i would recommend crank and bigend bearing change as well, this is going to be a lot more expensive but subaru engines are known for bearings to fail after approx 1000mile of running with gasket failure due to the pressure put on these bearings, if your planning on keeping the car id spend the money but otherwise it may be cheaper in long run to sell this as a project to someone who can do the work themselves and buy another? i wouldnt recommend a recon engine either know a few people with bad experiences,
hope this helps.

Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

well sniff test only shows hydrocarbon in the water, which yes could be headgasket but also could be cracked block, cracked head etc. does the car overheat?

Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

well sniff test has been done and it changed color straight away, so head gasket is gone the subaru mechanic said, its not overheating if i keep the water topped up, it aint smokey and its running sweet, so its going into the garage, 1500 at least i think, radiator timing belt, water pump rocker gaskets etc all getting done.

not wanted to sound like a dick but like i said above, it could be a cracked block or head, having the experience with subaru engines id say it is a good chance it is the gasket but 1500 sounds expensive for your heads just to be took off and put back on with new gaskets, then you run it up and it does the same because your block wasnt checked. if it was me i would have bottom end bearings changed as theres probably a 90% chance theyll fail a few miles later, dont want ya getting ripped off fella thats all you could probably get your full engine rebuilt with all new seals for 1500, personally id get a second opinion

Re: possible head gasket gone!!!!!

Go to a specialist Subaru man - better value and will have better experience building performance engines not just servicing them
