smoking from engine

i have a slight problem with the engine smoking. i start the car up and after driving for 5 minutes and engine temp up to normal if i stop there is smoke comeing from the engine. i have looked at engine when smoking and it appears to be comeing from just in front of the air box. i recently had the car serviced and they mentioned i may have a coolant leak somewhere. it has only ever smoked since the service. any ideas?

Re: smoking from engine

I had a problem with my rocker cover gaskets leaking. The oil was dripping down onto the exhaust manifold, burning the oil, causing it to smoke. It would only do it once the manifold was hot enough to burn the oil, normally about 5 mins or so. But as it was the drivers side that was leaking, the smoke came up just in front of the airbox. Maybe worth having a look in case you have the same prob.

Re: smoking from engine

it only smokes for the first 5 to 10 minutes of being up to engine temp. by the time i get home which takes half hour it does not smoke anymore. it only starts doing it again when i leave the car most of the day and drive it from cold.

The fact it only smokes for a few minutes is weird though, Rocker gaskets tend to leak more the more its driven so I was wondering if it was something else,
the reason I asked what it smelt like lol
It could just be the condensation burning off this time of year.

Re: smoking from engine

I still think it could be oil coming from somewhere tho, if it is a very small leak, it would make sense it only smokes when the engine is up to temp for 5 to 10 mins or so. As by then, the oil would have burnt off, and once its been standing a while, giving the drip time to gather again until its used, causing the smoke again. Try to have a good look around the area the smokes coming up from before you drive it next and see if you can see anything on the headers, or any other part in that area that heats up. As bob said, the power steering pump is in that area too, could be dripping onto the engine case causing the smoke.

Re: smoking from engine

as mentioned Rocker cover gaskets are common but also there is a O ring on power steering pumps that leak, If you could tell by the smell if its oil etc that would help.

Re: smoking from engine

i noticed today that it smoked before it was fully warmed up. also by the time i got to my local shop it had stopped again. i pulled of from the shop and gave it some bout half a mile to my house and it started again. i lifted the bonnet and its comeing from just below the top radiator hose but cant see where. then it stopped smoking even thou i had the engine running. weird!

Re: smoking from engine

After I had my last service I had a similar problem. In my case it turned out to be gearbox oil that had spilled onto the gearbox casing when the mechanic topped it up. When the car heated up it would start to smoke. If you stopped you could see that it was coming up from that direction. After a few days it stopped.
