cold start problem

hi all,

i am in need of a bit of advice regarding my venerable my97 classic. she's having trouble starting in the cold weather, by trouble i mean not even cranking over, most of the time it's just a click. it only ever does it in the cold weather and is never a problem any other time. i know it's not the battery as the charge/starter that i have has a battery test function and that always shows ok but sometimes even the extra oooomph from that doesn't help.

any ideas would be appreciated,

many thanks

tom

if it is the battery then its going back to halfords. has a lifetime warranty and only had it 18 months so they can get it sorted

Re: cold start problem

May be a poor connection on the battery clamps. Take them off clean the clamp and battery post and Vaseline them. Check the conditon of the cables and connections and the ones on the starter motor itself.

Re: cold start problem

sounds to me like battery or poor earth on the engine

usually if the starter sticks you dont get a noise

Re: cold start problem

I once had a car (ermmm a Rover!!! ) that did exactly that and wouldn't start. It turned out out to be a fautly starter motor. It was sticking and they use a load of power and it 'appeared' to drain the battery. If I jumped started it, then turned the engine off straight away and then tried to start using the key, the battery was fine and the engine started. I would suggest taking the starter motor off and giving it the once over and greasing where appropriate before spending loads on other things. Persoanlly, I dont think it will be the battery.

Just like the Ford Transits murder for this whatever way they mounted they pick up loads of clutch dust and wrecks starter, had to get them cleaned out aswell and blasted inside of the gearbox's bellhousing with an air gun to clear all the clutch dust to get a lot out and so far all good and done that over a year ago on one and no probs with it since
