Help Needed - Fluctuating Speedo on Imported 2006 Impreza 2.0R

Six months ago I returned from living in New Zealand and brought my 2006 Impreza 2.0R with me. I had the speedo face replaced by a company for it to comply with SVA testing (kph to mph).

Recently, the speedo has developed a problem. Initially, the needle was twitching and occasionally not registering at all. This has now worsened and has reached the point that as soon as the car starts to move, the speedo goes straight up to about 45mph and sits there regardless of speed.

For a while, giving the dashboard a resounding whack cured the problem (although often the temperature gauge dropped to zero), though now it registers the correct speed for a second then returns to 45mph.

The speedo is electronically driven (rather than cable) so I have removed the instrument cluster a couple of times and have removed and replugged the wiring looms. This helped the first time but now makes no difference at all.

It seems to me that the problem will be a faulty connection somewhere but does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to rectify this fault?

As its a import it could be the KPH/MPH converter, Have a look too the left of your TMIC(assuming it has 1, sorry) and you will see where the gearbox speed sensor is, there is normally a electronic converter, its mechanical on classics.
