Wiring Horn, Relay and Switch

Hi all,

OK, after a day of stripping my car and pulling out lots of wires that don't go anywhere I'm no closer to finding the fault with my horn.
I've tested the two horns and they work fine. The switch in the centre of the steering wheel is fine, but somewhere in between there's a fault. I've traced it back as far as I can go and just can't work it out.
I've decided to make a new loom for the horn but want to use the switch on the steering column, how can I do this ?
So far I have fitted new horns, fitted the relay as follows :

85 to Earth
30 to live feed (fused)
87 to horns
86 to switch

The switch in the steering wheel is earthed to the wheel hub and the live connection is the green cable in the loom (I followed the small spring switch at the back of the steering wheel in to the loom to identify which wire it is)

Does the switch need a live feed ? When I connect the switch to the relay it doesn't work. It's driving me nuts.
Please please help as I don't want to have to fit a push button in the dash board.

Thanks

it shudn't coz the powers commin from the relay. the switch will only send the power to the horns.

Re: Wiring Horn, Relay and Switch

just a thought mate but are the horns ment to be live then earthed to the horn push so that when you press the horn button it makes the connection to earth kind of the opposite to how you would imagine i may be completely wrong but i think the wiring would be similar to your interior light permanantly live but running to earth when you open the door.
hope this helps and i havent just confused the situation

cheers dan

Re: Wiring Horn, Relay and Switch

Yes, you're right. New wiring plan is :

87 to the hornns
86 to a permanent live (fused) feed
30 to a permanent live (fused) feed
85 to the original Subaru button, which when pressed is earthed.

Going to do this later this afternoon.

Cheers mate

Re: Wiring Horn, Relay and Switch

Went out this afternoon and rerouted the loom I made so that the switch is in the earth and it worked a treat.
After 12 months I finally have the horn
Took about 3 hours to complete the job, including pulling half the dash off and cleaning up previous pwners wiring attempts
MOT booked for tomorrow morning, lets hope she sais through.

Re: Wiring Horn, Relay and Switch

Car passed the MOT today
Only advisory note was slight corrosion on one of the break pipes, 15 fix.

When I dropped it off this morning I had pulled loads of trims off, grill off and a few other bits and pieces. Didn't see the point in putting it all back together for the MOT when I'm still working on it. When I picked the keys up this afternoon the guy said that he thought it would fail because it looked like a bag of S**t. Wasn't until he started to look over it did he realise all the work I've done
MOT only cost 25 too
