A remap on the std car will gain a lot in terms of driveability and also net more peak power (to around 250-260bhp). If you wanted to change exhausts then you can gain more (to around 280bhp)

A remap will make the car run more efficiently and I quite often find owners reporting much better fuel economy after remaps (as well as much better performance).

The 2001 wrx makes a very good base but there would be two things that I would suggest that will help... firstly a walbro 255 fuel pump (for safety - there is no poiint turning the wick up if it makes it unsafe), secondly is a 3 port boost solenoid (the original 2 port and the weak actuator on the TD04 mean it wont be possible to raise boost too much).
